These gorgeous passerines are known as "butcher birds" or "thorn birds." Why? Because these song birds has a raptor's personality without the tools. This means that they use alternative means of killing their prey, such as impaling their prey on barbed wire or thorns. Feisty! This floral piece was hand-stitched on 100% Kona cotton and is framed in a 5-inch Elbesee beechwood hoop.

The wildlife of New Zealand are constantly threatened by habitat loss, human conflict, and introduced predators. Forest & Bird works to preserve habitat and restore animal populations to what they once were.
